SERIES OF CHARGES.

LABOURER FOR TRIAL

Thirteen witnesses were called yesterday in the Police Court when a labourer, Leo Douffla* Morpetli, ajjed 29, appeared before Mr. J. Morlinjr, S.M., on a series of charges. Morpetli was arrested in the hall below .St. Paul's Church, Syniomfo Street, shortly before midnight 0:1 June 13.

Accused, for whom Mr. K. C. Aekins appeared, was charged with being a rogue and vagabond, being found without lawful excuse in St. Paul's Church; breaking and entering a place of worship, St. Paul's Church, and stealing !0d; and assaulting Garnet Hotrhdd Jones so as to cause him actual bodilv harm. Morpeth was further charged with the theft, from tho People's Palace Private Hotel, on June t>, of a suit of clothes, gold watch, silver chain and pendant, of a total valuj of £8 10/, the property of Thomas Harrison; the theft of a book of art union tickets valued at £1, on June 12; the theft of four cheque forms, worth 3d, on June 13* and, on June 13, with making a faWcheque for £25. Pleas of not guilty were entered by the accused to ail charges. On the four indictable counts he wae committed to the Supreme Court for trial, while on the remaining three summary charges he was remanded until July 29*.
