PRINTING TRADES.
PAST YEAR'S WORKING. MR. J. CARDWELL PRESIDENT. ''Trade, particularly in the commercial printing houses, has been btisk throughout the period under review, and in consequence very few of our members suffered the pangs of unemployment for any great length of time; the notable exception was in the case of linotype operators, where unemployment has been unpleasantly large," states the annual report of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Printing and Relaxed Trades Union, to be presented at the annual meeting to-ni^ht.
■ The import states that membership had almost doubled since the union's amalgamation four years ago. "We have 785 male and four female workers, excluding members on military service," states the report. "The largest sectional increase has been in the cardboard box firms, and fchie industry is growing enormously."
It is noted that two Conciliation Council sittings were held, but little headway wae made. After declaration of war the parties had met and had adjusted a few of the most glaring cases o€ wage provisions. Owing to the uncertainty of the position, it was agreed to adjourn, but it was optional for either side to call another sitting at any time.
By postal ballot. Mr. J. Card well has been re,-elected president of the lMiion for the fourth year in succession. Mr. Carilwell a!*o is national president r»f the union, having been appointed to that position in August last
