CEREMONY AT XAXTAXA.

KAITAIA, this day

The days of picking one's way alone elutshy footpaths by flickering tw<Ji~ light after dark in Kaitaia ended last night, when the first electric power in the Far Xorth wae officially switched on. A sub-etation has been constructed at l'amapuria, five milee from Kaitaia, and it reticulates the whole district.

The line runs in a direct line north through the steep and heavy wooded Manga mukas.

The chairman of the Town Board, Mr. li. Peace, in officially switching on the light**, emphasised the importance of power. The need for development at the present time wae also stressed by Mr. A. E. Biesett, chairman of the Bay of Islands Power Board. Warm tributes were paid by both speakers to the staff for the able way in which they had carried out a difficult job. Several hundred people attended the ceremony.
