Ilt > a «hree-year-old bay gelding by Nightly from •Clo-rane, and a halfbrother to Lady Clorane, is being hacked about at Kiccarton. AH Night was given a race at Kiccarton in March. PAID OVER QUARTER OF CENTURY. Nereus, having his second race since a let-up during the late autumn, upset the form in the Taipua Handicap at Otaki on Saturday. Drawing the rail, he was first out, and, after Gold Chase had set the main well clear through the middle stages, he was left in front again on the turn and ran on resolutely far a comfortable win. His win price was well over a quarter of a century. MAY NOT BE LONG. Whiphand, who cost Dr. M. G. Louisson 210 guineas as a yearlin.: at Trenthani last year, ran his best rao- to date when he finished second to The A ulture at Ashburton on Saturday, and he Is likely to « * maiden status soon. The merit of Ms showing was enhanced by the fact that he galloped a round of the track after his preliminary before he was pulled mp, otherwise he may hare given the winner more trouble. TOO GOOD. Hagen, a fresh, horse, prevailed In the Tainui Hack Handicap at Otaki on Saturday. This Siegfried four-year-old, who gave H. Dulieu his third winner during the day was haying his first outing since last spring. Hagen was simply a class above the field, and he has the size not.to be troubled by weight* He was third away and raced to the front past Wakararaand Shining Hours at the home turn, and scored without being ridden over the. last furlong. GETTING ON. . Rebel Star is approaching his eleventh year, and is wonderfully sound in wind and limb, in spite of a fairly strenuous ciireer. He is a half-brother to Cottineham, and has shown an aptitude for Jumping both over hurdles and country. In all probability he will be given a chance to earn distinction as a jumper later in the year. Rebel Star i* now owned and trained ? « • T G c G o Shaw ' of Riccarton, father of Mr. J. S. Shaw, who previously owned and trained the Robespierre gelding. GOOD HURDLER. El Meynell won his second race in as many starts over fences when he repeated his success at Ofaki last nion+h by also capturing the Pukehou Hack Hurdles on Saturday. He moved through fast to take charge goleg to the hurdle near the five furlongs.- afird, though challenged by Pekoe in the run- home, he stayed on to ecore by half at. length. EI VMeyael! was made a pronounced favourite, and he won probably more easily than thfe margin suggested. FIRST RIDE Ov|r FENCES. The light-weight horseman M. Caddy was having his first ride In a jumping race when he rode Golden Sight in the Dromore Steeplechase at Ashburton on Saturday and that was the Day Comet gelding's first appearance in public. Golden Sight, with Caddy 1n the saddle, had given some epectacular displays over the schooling fences, but on Saturday he did not survive the first obstacle, taking off too far and sustaining a severe fall. Caddy suffered n strained wrist, but was able to ride later in the day. NOTHING OUT OF ORDINARY. e Surcoat's performance in winning the Dromore Hack Steeplechase at Ashburton on Saturday was nothing out of the ordinary, and no doubt iif the unfortunate mishap in front of the stand had not occurred he would have found his fcaek very difficult. He appeared to take risks with the light jumps, and dragged' through two of them in a manner that would have been disastrous over bigger country. On the other hand, the mistakes did not retard his progress, and he finished full of running The true test, of his ability will be applied when he tackles the Trentham country next month.
