SPEEDING UP.

GOVERNMENT PLANS. FOODSTUFFS PRODUCTION. APPROVED BY BRITAIN. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. In order to stimulate production, plans have been announced by the Government in connection with a programme which has the approval of the British Government. The Department of Agriculture, said the Hon. F. Langstone, acting-Minister of Agriculture, has prepared the plan for increased production, which lias the following aims for export in the 1940-41 season. Butter.—To be maintained at last season's level. Cheese. —To be increased by 15,000 to 20,000* tons. Bacon.—To be increased by 10,000 tons. Beef.—To be increased. Mutton and Lamb.—To be maintained at least at last season's levels. Eggs.—To be made available in the greatest possible quantity. Pasture and Clover Seeds.—To be made available in increasing quantities. Mr. Langstone states that the Government's responsibility can be summarised as follows: —To give financial facilities through recognised sources for capital and working; to give assistance in procuring essential imports; to give full advisory and supervisional service; to provide plant, either from the Public i Works Department or by control of private plant, finance and labour to break in suitable Crown land or to renovate existing farms." Mr. Langstone said the programme stipulated that all excess profits should ' accrue to the State. The Government will | also consider the establishment of linseed oil extraction plant and the manufacture of stock feed as a by-product. The workers' responsibilities would be the expedition of operations at all processing and manufacturing points, ensuring a more rapid loading and unloading transport, and assuring that New Zealand would have adequate supplies of coal from its own resources. The Minister also pointed out the need for additional feed crops. He said that the co-operative use of implements on North Island grazing farms could be introduced. Another proposal was to adopt contract work, possibly with the assistance of the Public Works Department machinery, to use spare land, and to provide suitable labour, seeds, fertiliser and living accommodation on farms. One I proposal was to use the Internal Market- : ing Department as a buying and distributing agent..
