RAILWAYMEN'S UNITS. FIX E INITIAL RESPONSE. (liy Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day
Pleasure was expressed by the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, to-day at the initial response to his appeal for members of the service to enlist in the two railway operating companies which are being provided for service overseas. The first day's appeal, he said, resulted in 00 offers of service. Already, he said, 1100 members of the railway service had been accepted for service in the overseas forces. The Minister pointed out that on the railway operating side it was neccssary to have a large number of qualified engine drivers and firemen, and he made a special appeal to members of the locomotive running branch to respond to the country's call in these days of urgent need.
