WINTER BOWLS.

CHALLENGES SUCCEED. SOLDIERS' TOURNEY COMPLETED.

(By TRUNDLER.)

Perfect weather on Saturday was most convenient for several rather important finals, as it leaves the coast clear for the two-day tournament at Balmoral, commencing on Saturday week. At Ilillsboro Frank Firtlh made a good start for the winter season by winning the May tournament for Gleu Eden. The other tournament added one more record to A. E. Harland (Mount Eden), but it was really more notable because of JN. Orange (Balmoral) reaching the final. He is nuit'e a young player, but had shown considerable promise by surviving until the last five in tolio club championship during the past summer.

I 'J lie Edwin Stars challenge gave an even j game until the tea adjournment, but the I holders then did most of the scoring. i largely owing to Corby's steady play and to Maud's success in saving whenever Transport had built up a good position. The winners pay a tribute to Taplin's accuracy, but it was impossible to stop the I Ellerslie team, who have now won eight games In succession : It. Lett. h. Corby 11. Barnett. E. Maud (Ellerslie). holders, ! I®* v * Ere. E. G. Jeffrey. \V. Ilonseroft, J. C. Taplln (Transport), challengers, 11. The Denison Pins were also successfully defended by a substantial margin, after an even staff. In fact at half-time the visitors were leading by 0 to 8. but they failed to j score again until the holders had run up another _ ten poir.ts. They reached within three of the holders, but West End clinched it by scoring three on the twentv-first: .T. H. Coltbursf, W. J. H. Tbomnss, A. H. Stichbury. W. Rremner (West End), holders. 21. v. W. Alleock. H. Mitchell. T. H. Sissons, A. Moon (Te Papana). challengers. 15. The game was made all the more Interesting by both skips driving with their usual skill, and several times the jack went over the boundary. The next challengers are A. Hitehen (Stanley), and W. A. Cadwallader (Edendale). Jordan Pins to Otahuhu. The Jordan Pins were the only trophies to change hands, and that was only after a strong defensive game by the defenders, for they were IS behind at one stage, hut succeeded in getting the margin'down to 3. A. T. McLaren. 11. E. Rule. A. J. Carson, S. E. Harper (Otahuhu). challengers. 23, v. A. Fameji, A. H. Wicginton. R- EaiDg. L,. Jone» (Onehunga), holders, 20. The next challenger is C. T. Wadsworth (Mangere). The Onehunga rink at St. Helier's had the? very opposite experience in the Diggers' Badges, for at half-time they had reached I 16 to 3, but afterwards scored only two singles, while the local team ran up to 10. j This rema>kable run included three fours, j a fact that caused soiuc comment, seeing that Cross and Robertson are both driving well this season. P. H. Barrett, P. S. Dean, R. .Dawson. S. McMahon (Ellerslie) holders, 19, v. W., H. Zuill, p. W. Hayes, R. Cross, H.A. Robertson (Oneliunga i challengers. 18. Prawn ends occasionally occur in the course of a game, but nc case comes to mind where the 21st Is drawn, and certainly not in a challenge match. This game is likely to be rem'embered just as much for a drawn 21st as for a debacle after a big lead. Barrett had played first, after McMahon had won the previous end with a fine trail, and he was lying two when Zuill tralled.the jack for second bliot. Dean then played a trail, and* landed the jack alongside ZnlH'g bowl,, both touching the white. The two bowls, stayed there. Cross and Robertson falling to move tltem. The next challengers are A. L. Nugsnt (Rocky Xook) I and W. Horscroft (Transport). While these returned soldiers were at St. Helier's, the finalists in the annual returned soldiers' tournament were playing at Onehunga. The president of thi» Auckland Centre, Mr. E. W. Inder, attended to present the' trophies, accompanied by three members ,of the executive, Messrs. I. J. Sutherland, vice-president, A. S. Dignan and M. J. Walsh. They played the local club president, Mr. W. M. Kerns, two vicepresidents, Messrs. W. Miller and A. J. Pople, and Mr* G. T>.- Pulham, who had donated a very fine pair of antlers, a trophy from his own gun nearly 50 years ago. This will be held Jn the pavilion of the winners, S. Bade. F. Bridges, T. W. Chrlstey, G. A. Waterman (Takapuna) until the next tournament. Mr. Pulham surprised the large assembly by investing the winning skip. *nth. an tinusually beautiful tiki, to be held for a similar period. Mr. .Inder announced that, if .the . club cared to name a date; fo. a similar tournament next- year, and to again give up their three greens for the returned soldiers, it could be included in the official fixtures of the Centre. 'He and Mr. Kerns warmly congratulated the winners on ' surviving from a record entry of 48. rinks, and also the runiiers'up :@\. C. Farley, V. R. Ellisdon, B. liandrup, W. A. Eorum (Rocky Nook).; . . .. ... v „ ,
