"THEY MADE ME A CRIMINAL."
MELODRAMA FOJt CIVIC. John Garfield, one of the most capable male stars of Hollywood, who achieved his first big success iu "Four Daughters," heads the cast of the forthright melodrama, "They Made Me a Criminal," booked to open at the Civic Theatre on Friday. Garfield enters the story as a prizefighter with all the worst attributes of his profession. As the picture develops he sheds his vices grudgingly, under pressure of circumstances and contacts, electing, finally, to discount, to himself, his ultimate sacrifice on behalf of the unwilling loved ones. The now-famous Dead End kids come into the picture, after it is well under way, ably portraying young tougtis of the New York slums, under the. custody of a kindy matron operating a fruit ranch on the Arizona desert. Ann Sheridan; renowned as "the Oomph GirJ," is excellent as the lady in the case, and popular old May Robson shows her usual competence in another important role. Startlinglv realistic, the film moves briskly from the start and tells its story in vivid i and uncompromising style. 1
