ASSAULT CHARGES.
MAH FOR OBSERVATION. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAXGAREI, this day. Charged with assaulting his wife on April 1, a man, aped 49, appeared before Mr. R. Ferner, S.M., at the Whangarei Police Court to-day. He was further charged with assaulting his daughter on April 4 with intent to commit actual bodily harm. Owing to accused's condition Senior Sergeant A. Henderson asked that he be remanded in custody for medical observation. Mr. Ferner asked why this course was deemed necessary. Senior Sergeant Henderson: This man and his family agree that ne is in a very nervous condition. Invariably when he took liquor, he eaid, he ill-treated his wife acd family so that their lives were a continual misery and at times endangered. There was insanity in his family and it would be in his own interests for him to be kept under observation. Speaking from the dock accused aeked whether it would be possible for him to be remanded to hospital. "I suffe* -from claustrophobia," he said, "and being shut up in * cell is torture to me. If given my freedom I promise not to interfere with my wife and family and to report daily to the police." Senior Sergeant Henderson: If he goes to Auckland he will be seen by the gaol eurgeon and given all tie treatment he requires. The application of the police was granted and. accused was remanded to appear at Whangarei on April 12. A further cliafge of -drunkenness was not proceeded" with. '' ■■ ' .
