The great importance of teaching children to .swim wae stressed this, afternoon, when the new school bath, which hae been constructed on the Cornwall Park School plan, was officially opened at the Kowhai Intermediate School in the presence of a representative gathering. Among the old pupils were some of the ship's company of H.M.S. Achilles.

The chairman of the committee, Mr. A. A. Buckley, presided, and .welcomed the visitors.

The frincipal speaker was the Mayor of Mount Albert, Mr. H. A. Anderson, who pointed out that the proposal had originated with the Mount Albert Physical Welfare and Recreation Committee. There were now baths at three schools in the borough—Owairaka School, Mount Albert Grammar School and the Kowhai Intermediate School.

Mr. Anderson said that "the Mount Albert Physical Welfare and Recreation Committee was fulfilling a definite function, and was to be congratulated. Those connected with the welfare of the schools had done their part, and the council was glad to give every possible assistance.

Mr. Anderson paid a tribute to the work of Dr. T. Harold Pettit, president of the Auckland Surf Life-saving Association and a resident of the borough, who had given invaluable help, as he wan also a member of the National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation. A keen advocate of swimming, Dr. Pettit had given them guidance and advice.

Mr. Anderson congratulated the school on having a facility that would supply a vital need in teaching children to swim in safe surroundings.

Dr. Pettit said that the time was coming when every school would have its own swimming bath. Every encouragement was being given to swimming and it was vital, that every child should be taught correctly how to swim before leaving school.
