"DANGER TO SHIP"
SEAMAN GAOLED. NOT WANTED ON VESSEL ASSAULTED THIRD ENGINEER. • Evidence by the captain of an overseas vessel that his officers had told him that they would not leave port if a seaman, William McQueen, a Scotsman, aged 22 years, remained a member of the crew was given in the Police Court this morning. McQueen was charged with assaulting the third engineer of the vessel, and with tho theft of a carton of sheep's tongues valued at £2 10/. The captain said that accused had been the cause of trouble throughout the voyage from England, lnvd done little work, and was a danger to the safety of the ship. Witness agreed with his officers' decision. McQueen was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on the assault charge, and on the theft charge was ordered to come up for sentence if called on within 12 months. Conditions were that he was to have no liquor and was to leave New Zealand in the first berth that was obtained for him. Ha was ordered to make restitution.
