NIGHTCAXM GOES FAST. TRAINING AT RICCARTON. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, thk day. Nightcalni worked in impressive style.' over seven furlongs on the outside" of the a course proper at Riccarton this morning when the tinal gallops for the Canterbury ' Jockey Club's midsummer meeting were held. After overnight rain the course provided fast going. Though he was only supposed to go six furlongs, Nightcalm ran the first in 14 l-5s and reached the three furlongs in 39 l-ss. He came home solidly to record 1.29 3-5 for seven furlongs. Among the moat attractive workers were Paper Slipper, Scold, Great Flight, Knight Commander, Gold Flight and Nigella. Paper Slipper, after being half a length behind Counterblast until well into the straight, gradually worked to the front t» win by a head over half a mile in 48s. The same time was recorded by Great Flight, who drew out nicely, to beat Great Swoop by a length. Sovereign Lady strode out over a mile, the last. seven furlongs in 1.31 1-5. and the final half-mile in 525. The Wrecker finished well in front of Iu the Dark over the same ground in 1.31, while Settlement we» a half-length in front of Prudent Prince in 1.30 1-5, the-first three taking 38 £s*. Settlement broke away iu front, but was soon steadied up, while Prudent Prince caught up. Nigella. who shapes as though she will stay on better than in the past, ran right away from Dranoel and Good Health over six furlongs in Ll6 2*5, the last half-mile in 50 2-3s. Nigella woa> easing up by four lengths. Wine Card also recorded l'.lfi '2-5 for six furlongs, the last half-mile taking 51s. Kings "Ernst was a length in front of Lady Leigh over six furlongs in 1.18, the final half-mile in 52 2-ss. Scold went exceptionally welL Lover covered half a mile in 47 4-ds, the best of the morning. Doria was a length clear of Don't Forget at the end of five furlongs in 1.2 3-5. Night Dress, though hard ridden in the straight, was four lengths behind Willie Win over a mfle in 1.44 3-5, the first half-mile in S2 l-ss. Willie Win did his work well. Alcatra* broke well away from Chit Chat and Kacewell at the start of seven furlongs. Racewell gradually began to drift in the straight, but Chit Chat got to within a length of Alcatraz to record 1.31 4-5. a good trial on the part of Chit. ChatPrincess Minerva, after running a furlong in 13 3-ss, was joined by Ageratum and they were together most of the way. though Ageratum was a neck in front at the end of a mile in 1.46 2-5, the last half-mile taking 53 l-ss. Atreus ran half a mile in 51 4-ss, while Ooncerrpiteh was restricted to li 3 2-5 for six furlongs, the last half-mile in 54 4-ss. Gay Hussar ran five furlongs well in 1.3 3-5.

Merry March was the first to work after breakfast, "running half a mile in 545. Knight Commander and Waka. after running their first two of six fuilongs in 24 4-ss, were joined by Roman Son. who led them by a length for two ftirlongs. ' where Waka was in second place. Knight Commander then put in bis claim and failed by a head to catch Roman Son. with Waka three lengths back. Knight Commander recorded 1.16— a smart effort. Stylos* and Rue finished on terms over half a mile in 49 4-ss, galloping easily throughout. Tantivy was no match for Great Night over five furlongs in 1.4 3-5, finishing four lengths behind. Gold Flight ran five furlongs in 1.2 1-5. finishing on solidly. Passenger and Baldoon were well matched over half a mile np the back in 49 4-ss. Gay Parade beat Metric by half a. length over sis furlongs in 1.16 4-5, the final halt-mile in 50 4-ss. Dividend and Muriet ran the first hah* of a mile in 51 l-ss. but Muriet started to drop back a furlong further on, Dividend recording 1.45 2-5. Retrogression jumped away a couple of lengths clear of Shikari in a half-mile spriit" up the bac-k and was never headed, taking 50s. The plough track was heaw earlv when Stylist and Omapo worked, bnt after the interval it was fairly fast. StvlUt. after running the first three furlongs in 41 2-ss. completed six in 1.19 2-5. her stablemate. Omapo. getting through a similar task. Rebellion was too solid for riumugc over six fmlongs run in 1.10 1-5. finishing well in front. Royal Chief and Moorsotis ran homo nicely from the three furlongs post i m 36 2-ss. the former being a neek in front. Studley Royal beat del Forcet at the end oi six fnilomrs in 1.19. the fir-t three m 38 3-ss. Both could have done 'better.
