MAORI SOLDIERS.
500 TO REPRESENT TRIBES.
CENTENNIAL GATHERING.

PALMERSTON NORTH, thie day.
The Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, announced yeeterday that 500 members of the Maori Battalion would be selected to represent all tribes in New Zealand for attendance at the Centennial celebrations at Waitangi on February 5 and 6.
This meant, he said, that theee men would be in camp at the Pahnerston North showgrounds for only a short time before leaving for Waitangi, but the officers and non-cominisejoned officers who had been in camp eince December were doing flne work. They were very keen to be able to bring on member? of the battalion.
The. question when the battalion would pro overseas wtw* dependent on whether the battalion accompanied the. second or third echelon. This, in turn, wae governed by when the second echelon would depart.
