MR. TAU HENARE.

A well known and very popular leader /ft the Maori race in North Auckland, Mr. Tau Hcnarcj has died at his home at Motatau, Bay of Inlands, after four years of poor health. Born in the Bay of Islands. Sir. ranked as a chieftain, being a direct 'descendant of Kawiti, a renowned warrior of the Ngapuliis. Mr. Hen are's own sub-tribe, Ngatihine, is the biggest and one of the j most influential in the North.

Considering that he did not have a day's schooling, Mr. Hcnare's accomplishments in public life are nothing short of amazing. For 24 years from l!) 14 to 1938 he represented the Northern Maori constituency in .Parliament, and ho gave valuable assistance to the Government in organising Maori affairs, accomplishing much for the welfare of his people. Ho was a member of the Waitangi Trust Board, and took part in the consolidation of native lands in the North Auckland area, himself farming land at Motatau.

Throughout iiis life he took a keen interest in sport. Ho was a prominent supporter of the Church of England, and married a daughter of. the Rev. Parata Awanui, who predeceased him in 191 S. He is survived by six sons arid two daughters.
