BREMNER SURVIVES.

IN THE FINAL EIGHT.

N.Z. BOWLING PAIRS. WEST END SKIP ELIMINATES LIVINGSTONE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON*. Thursday. The conclusion of to-day's post-section play iai the pairs event of the Xew Zealand Centenniail Bowling tournament found only one previous winner of tlhe title, W. Bremner (West End, Auckland), who was lead for Hard ley at Cihrdstciliurch in 1932, among the remaining eight teams in tlie competition. The only other former ibowling champion left in is (J. Spearman (Sydenham), who won the singles at Wellington in 1937.

The other six contestants for t'lie pairs are A. W. C'ullen (Thorndon), J. B. Reid (Lyail Bay), I'. McWhuiinell (Hataitai), R. A. Barnsdale (Uhristchnrclh). ]>ic'kson (Thorndon), and J. B. Lawrie (Isiland Bay).

In spite of a gusty northerly wind which prevailed throughout the day and put the skill of tJie players to a severe .Lest, a high standard of play w-as maintained and there were some close and exciting contests. One .particularly interesting match was that in the thiid round between Livingstone (Onehunga) and Hawken (Hamilton). After fairly level scaling the game went to 22 'heads when .Livingstone secured hie one point for victory. Livingstone's favourite run shot was a factor in the result. Honours in this game, howerver, largely went to the two leaf Is, Whi'ttaiker (Onehunga) and Yeatnan (Hamilton), both of whom gave sterling performances.

The next round saw Livingstone, ■who is a former winner ot' the Dominion singles championship. Australian singles and run-ner-up in the Umpire rinks, matched against' Riemner, who is a previous winner of the paiiw, rinks and Empire links. There was a. large galley in anticipation of an exciting contest, but Livingstone and Whiittaker were outclassed by tilic fine play of Bremner and Donaldson, the West Knd pair having a comfortable margin for the greater pait of the game to win 26 —19. Brenmor's driving was a feature of his exhibition.

The defeat of Haworth (Canterlbury) who has paii-s and rinks victories to his credit by H. Dickson (Thorndon), was a fitting reward for the latter's consistent play. If is also interesting to note that his father, A. Dickson, was lead. Reid (Lyiall Ray), who has for his lead Brackenridge, a former pairs cfliampion. secured a one-point victory over Dowland (St. Kilda).

The pairs championship will be continued next week, the draw being: Brenvner v. Dickson, Lawrie v. Spearman, Barnsdale v. McWhannell. Cullen v. Reid. There will be section play in the fours championship to-morrow, the entries numbering 172. Two games diily of 25 ends -with no time limit will be played.
