BRIEF BUT SEVERE.
PAKOWHAX VISITATION.
(from Our Correspondent.) <• , NAPIER, Wednesday, j Travelling on a, narrow course from the foothills across Taradale and Pakowhai, a brief but aerer* hailstorm did severe damage to orchard and other crops in that area. Mr. J. Goudie, of Taradale, said that in 10 minutes hailstones, some of them as large as marbles, wiped out all but one of 200 grape vines growing on his property. Out of a crop of plums ready for picking and estimated to yield 1000 eases ho was doubtful if he would get enough to till one case. Elsewhere tomatoes, water melons and pumpkins met with a similar fate, being bruised to such an extent as to make them unsaleable. Maize was stripped almost to the stalk. Tho storm's course was a narrow one and it expended itself before it reached the more extensive fruitgrowing area* in tho vicinity of Hastings.
