BIG PROJECT.
HUME RESERVOIR.
IRRIGATES THREE STATES.
COST AUSTRALIA £12,000,000.
Three times the amount of water contained in Sydney Harbour. . . . That gives some impression of the size of the Hume Reservoir, the parent dam that irrigates a vast territory along the Murray River and brings fertility to sections of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.
Mr. R. J. Meiklejohn, officer in charge of the dam, is at present visiting New j Zealand on a three weeks' holiday and is accompanied by his wife. He said yeeterday that the construction of the j irrigation scheme had cost £12,1)00,000, the money being supplied by the three States concerned and a proportion being j subscribed by the Commonwealth. The territory irrigated would be for fruitgrowing and grazing. One thousand miles of channels were provided for to distribute the water and 500,000 acres would be made fertile.
