CANNED FRUIT.
DOMINION SUPPLIES.
DIFFICULTY OVERCOME.
AUSTRALIAN BAN LIFTED. Resumption of supplies of Australian canned fruits to New Zealand has been arranged as a result of the lifting of the ban imposed by the Australian Canned Fruit Control Board last month. The board's action was taken to mark its disapproval of trade on a system of deferred payments, but it was stated today that the chief objections had been removed by the financial arrangements now operating under Reserve Bank control. A cable received by an Auckland importer of canned fruit this morning announced that Australian shipments would be made to New Zealand on a basis which provided for remittance of 25 per cent of the payment in the first quarter of next year and the remaining 75 per cent ill the second quarter. New Zealand purchasers would be required to pay 5 per cent interest during the period between the arrival of shipments and the transfer of the funds to the Commonwealth.
Substantial orders for canned fruits were placed by New Zealand lirnis with Australian suppliers early in the year, and it is expected the shipments will arrive during the next six weeks. October will be a month of heavy importations.
Because of the shortage of supplies in the Dominion the decision of the Australian authorities has caused general relief. It is considered likely that raisins, muscatels and other kinds of fruits not sold in canned form will be supplied under similar arrangements.
