OBITUARY.
MR. W. E. W. WINSHIP.
! • Vlr - William Edward Whitaker Winship, whose death has occurred, instituted the first travelling moving pictures in North Auckland. If the hall in which the pictures were to be shown was not big enough they were produced in the open air. Travelling in those days was accomplished on horseback and in coastal steamers. On many occasions the performance would not commence till 9 or 10 o'clock at night, due to difficulties in transport. Mr. Winship came from Howe, England, and was originally employed with the "Observer." When he gave up the picture show business he commenced business in Pitt Street, Auckland, as a paper bag manufacturer. Later he went to Whangarei and ran a daily paper. On returning to •Auckland he built the Parnell picture theatre. He took an active part on boards and committees. Daring tliw past six years he had operated a paper bag manufacturing factory and was it up to the time of his death. He is survived by his wife and four eons, and two daughters by a former marriage.
