FARMERS PLEASED.
A BUMPER HARVEST.
BRITAIN'S LATE WHEAT.
ROOTS AND FRTJITS GOOD. (Special.—By Air Mail.) LONDON, August 12. Britain is going to have a 'bumper harvest this year. Crops everywhere are good, say farmers. Due to heavy rains, however,* wheat harvesting is making a late start in most parte of the country. "In a normal year harvesting would be in swing in the first week of August,"' an official of the National Farmers' Union said. "In some places, even n<J\v, the wheat is still green. The crop generally seems to be extremely good, though some of it has been spoiled by the heavy rain. There are fields of wheat knocked flat.".
The continuous, rain and cold winds in the early part of the year have combined to make the hop crop late. Roots and fruit, however, are extraordinarily good and the plum crop is enormous. Farmers are selling plums to fanners at £3 a ton, although a portion of the crop will not be worth picking.
