Thousands of men of all ages jrat In-red at (ho Victoria Military Barracks, yesterday, desiring to enlist Lor military duty. Officials •were compelled to inform applicants that there is at present no call for general service, but. former exservicemen were invited to join the Army reserve through the Returned Soldiers' League. A similar eagerness to serve is reported in other states. The examination of all visiting vessels is now being carried out at all ports. Shot Across Bows. Thousands Of Offers Of

Service.

MANY NURSES ENROLLED. (Received 9.30 a.m.) OTTAWA, September 4. The Defence Department has been deluged with thousands of offers to sei \e in any capacity. Two thousand and five hundred nurses have enrolled for overseas service.

Earlier cable messages stated that the Canadian Government, in proclaiming the War Measures Act, 1014, declared the '"existence of a state of apprehended war." The militia, naval services and Air Force have been placed on an active service basis.

The Cabinet met at n a.m. Although it is taken for granted that Canada will join Britain. Australia and New Zealand in declaring war. it is virtually certain the actual declaration will await the meeting of Parliament.
