CAR "MILKED."

PETROL SIPHONED FROM TANK

"Siphoning benzine from the tanks of motor cars parked in the street is a very common type of offence and we receive many complaints. Such offences are hard to detect," said Detective-Sergeant •McHugh in the Police Court yesterday afternoon, when two men were convicted oil a charge of stealing one gallon and a half of benzine, valued at 3/6, from a car in Hakanoa Street, near Richmond Road, late on Saturday night.

George James Evans (20), a motor driver, for whom Mr Gray appeared, pleaded guilty to the charge, while William Hector McKinnon (22), driver, who was represented by Mr. Noble, pleaded not guilty. After hearing much evidence, the magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien, said he was satisfied that McKinnon went to the car with Evans expressly for the purpose of stealing benzine by "milking." It was a pernicious type of case. Evans was fined £5. McKinnon was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour on a previous theft charge for which he was on probation, and . convicted and discharged for the : theft-oi benzine.—
