SUGAR FROM PERU.

AN UNUSUAL CARGO.

NAIRXBANK AT CHELSEA WHARF.

Unusual interest attached to the arrival yesterday afternoon of the Bank Line motor ship Nairnbank, of 516S tons, in that she carried a cargo of sugar from Peru. Although sugar is grown in fairly large quantities in the western parts of Peru, this is one of the first, if not the only shipment to have come to Auckland from there.

The cargo, of over 7000 tons, is of the cane variety, and was taken to the Chelsea refining works. As a rule most sugar supplies for this country come from the Pacific Islands and Queensland.

Some difficulty was experienced in loading the cargo in Peru, for most of it had to be put on board by lighter, and many of the beaches had heavy surf running. The original cargo had to be discharged, and, all in all, over twenty ports were visited by the Nairnbank in the course of her movements round the coast. On some occasions, as many as two ports were visited in the same day.

The vessel was off Xortli Head shortly before 2 o'clock, and finally tied up at the Chelsea wharf at approximately 5.45 p.m. Owing to the length of the boat, the pilot had some trouble in berthing her at the wharf, but she was snugly tied up eventually. The Nairnbank had an uneventful trip from Peru, some stormy, but not exceptionally bad weather being met with.

No passengers were carried, and the crew was made up mainly of Peruvians and Malay Indians.
