POSITION IMPROVES. LOSS REDUCED BY £43,697. FIGURES FOR FOUR WEEKS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) Thursday. A working loss of £37,574 for the four weeks ended July 22, revealed by the abstract of the railway accounts gazetted in Wellington, to-day, compares with losses of £81,271 for the corresponding period last year, and of £22,897 in 1937. There has been an improvement of £43,097 in the position for the period compared with that of last year. The gross revenue for the four weeks was £648,037, which was £02,521 more than a year ago. Expenses were increased by £18,824 to £085,011. The operating account for the North Island shows a revenue of £334.51.3, an increase of £33,270, and expenses totalling £302.100, an increase of £3377. There was a loss of £27,593, compared with a loss of £57,480 last year. The receipts of the South Island railways were £210,502, an increase of £17,097, and expenses were £243,986, or £6000 higher. There was a working loss of £33,424, compared with a loss of £44.401. 11 The balance of miscellaneous revenue was £23,443, compared with £20,676 in 1938. The gross revenue was £102,902 and the expenditure £75,519. For the period from April 1 to July 22 the net revenue was £218,943, compared with £44,114 last year, an increase of £174,829. The gross revenue was £2,945,813, an increase of £252,818. The expenditure was £2,726,870, an increase of £77,989.
