REP. HOCKEY.
WAIKATO V. AUCKLAND.
FIJI PLAYS COUNTRY XL BOTH GAMES AT HOBSON PARK. The Auckland hockey XI. will be called upon, for the first time this season, to defend the New Zealand Challenge Shield, which it has successfully held since lifting it from Canterbury in 1931. Waikato is the challenging team and it is fielding a strong eleven. A feature of the game will be the appearance of no fewer than nine Xew Zealand representatives, six on the Auckland side and three in the Waikato tea m.
After their draw with Canterbury in 1931, the challengers have travelled each year to Auckland in an endeavour to lift the trophy, some close scores being registered. Last year they managed to hold the Auckland eleven in a drawn game, each side scoring three goals.
In the curtain-raiser, the Country representatives will be opposed to the undefeated Fiji touring team, which this week terminates its tour of the Auckland province. Despite the strenuous nature of their tour, nine matches in 16 days, they have consistently given high class exhibitions and headed by M. Bay, the ex-Xew Zealand representative, have been moulded into a strong combination.
Their record to date is:—Played 7. won 6, drawn 1, lost 0. Goals: For, 22; against, 8.
