DELAY EXPLAINED.
PROPOSED NEW AGREEMENT.
MEN ON PUBLIC WORKS. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. "No blame whatever is attached to the officials .and the New Zealand Workers' Union for the delay in completing the proposed new agreement between the union and the Public Works Department," stated the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, in an interview.
Union officials had conferred some time ago with officers of the Department and completed their negotiations, the Minister said. The proposed agreement had then been passed on to him and since it involved public expenditure he had 6ent it on to the Cabinet for consideration. Delay In reaching finality had been due to the fact that the Cabinet was short-handed through Ministers being ill or absent from New Zealand.
The union officials, he reiterated, had done their part and the decision now rested with the Government, over which the officials hud no control. Mr. Semple said he was making the statement because there had been numerous inquiries from members of the -union as to the reason for the delay. He hoped finality would be reached within a. few days.
