"PERFECTLY UNIQUE."

BLANK CHEQUE SENT.

WITH PLEA OF GUILTY. i "This is perfectly unique," said the magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien, in the Pukekohe Police Court yesterday, when Louis Raymond Handley, a farmer, of Glenmurray, wrote to the clerk of the Court admitting having no warrant of fitness for his motor vehicle, and enclosing a blank cheque form for paying the fine on conviction.

"Mr. Handley sends an open cheque with no amount on it. Apparently it is a good one; it is a cheque from the Bank of New Zealand at Auckland and signed L. R. Handley. The date is August 15. In his letter he says: 'As I will'be unable to attend the Court, I would esteem it as a favour if you would accept a plea of guilty for not having a certificate of fitness. I have enclosed a cheque to be filled in with the amount of the fine.' This shows that he is trusting the honesty of the Court," the magistrate added.

Inspector N. C. Davenport informed the magistrate that when he stopped defendant's truck his warrant had expired three months beforehand.

It was stated that there was 15/6 mileage to be paid, as defendant had not uplifted a registered letter.

"In view of the circumstances defendant will be convicted and ordered to pay costs," the magistrate said. These were set down at 10/, with 15/6 expenses.
