VIEW IN ITALY.
WAJt VERY UNLIKELY.
No Enthusiasm In Poland Over
Peace Move Reports.
MARTIAL SPIRIT LAUDED.
United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, August 15. A Rome message says that complete calm reigns throughout Italy. The public generally is confident that war is very unlikely.
Warsaw newspapers give prominence to the peace plans, including the suggestion that America join in a loan to enable Germany to shift from war to peace economy. Peace moves do not arouse enthusiasm in Poland. Newspapers publish fulsome laudations of Polish martial spirit.
The French Press lias received the suggestions of negotiations over Danzig icily, expressing the opinion that the Italo-German demands are not likely to be acceptable to the democracies.
M. Henri de Kerillis, writing in "L'Epoque," says: "It is improbable that any German solution would satisfy Poland, which is what Germany wants, in order to say that her generous proposals have been rejected, thereby obtaining an excuse for action. But if a conference eventuates, it is in Germany's interest to put forward the largest number of claims."
"L'Oeuvre" says: "We will not die for Danzig, and neither will the Germans. If we both die. it will be because Herr Hitler, after criticising the ex-Kaiser, adopted his policy in most unfavourable conditions. If he plunges into war, it will mean death to all Europe."
Other newspapers exhort the public to keep cool and declare France is resolved to block aggression.
The Rome correspondent of "The Times" says it is understood the Axis Powers express in their communications to the Holy See their fear that the "warmongering activities of their opponents," especially Poland, which is being "egged on by the democracies," are leading to a rapid deterioration of the European situation.
They then cite attacks upon and oppression of Germans in Poland and pressure allegedly being applied to Italians in France and Tunisia, as two factors likely to create a position which Germany and Italy will be unable to support much longer.
