Some time au'o an art union to raise funds for sporting activities during the Centenary celebrations was organised by tin' Minister and £11,200 was realised. Trustees were appointed to administer the fund and the Minister to-day announced allocations totalling £10,flfl."> to various sports bodies. The balance will probably be allocated to organisations which were late in placing their n pplicat ions. Of the total, £4145 is made tip of direct, grants, while loans total £3110 and guarantees £.1040. The grants have been made as follow: — Auckland Centennial Provincial Council £1 TiOO ' New Zealand Rowing Association (eondltlonal on a visit of an Australian crew) £500 New Zealand nasKetliall Association £ inn j New 7,ealain| Croquet Council .... £400 New Zealand Rowling Association .. £400 Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club £300 National Rifle Association £000 1 New Zealand Women's Ilocke.v Association ! £200 New Zealand Onn Clubs' Assoeiation £'JOO Welllnitton Provincial Yacht and Motor noat Association £10."i Ski Council of the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand .... £150 Loan to Cricket Council. The principal loans are: — New Zealand Cricket foundl .... £1200 New Zealand Amnteur Athletic Association £550 New Zealand Surf and Life-saving Association £450 The principal guarantees are: — Rowing Association £500 Surf Association £400 New Zealand Hockey Association £375 New Zealand Women's Cricket Council £300 New Zenland Lawn Tennis Association £300 New Zealand Athletic. Cycling and Axemen's I'nlon £250 New Zealand Table Tennis Association £225 Tho remainder of the guarantee* are for amounts ranging from £25 to £100. Mr. Parry said that in all ease* where loans were granted the allocation was to be a first chargo against any profits accruing from tho purposes for which it was granted.
Improvements To Grounds. He added that it was obvious that after tho Centenary sports period considerable sum* of money would be in hand from returns and loans and guarantees not required. That money would be distributed by way of grants after consideration by tho National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation for permanent improvements to sports grounds and added facilities. Some organisations had already made application for these grants, but consideration hHcl been deferred as tho principal object of tho art union was the provision of Centenary sports activities.
