Shoes, since the Romans came with obnails in them to these shores, have '.ways been a matter of interest to the '•itish people. The Romans had shoes >r vari us occupations. The well-to-o wore sandals, which they left off at leals, but the field labourer and the oldier wore loose leathern shoes with obnails in the soles.
