RICH IN FERNS.
BEAUTY IN DOMINION.
With 148 species. Xew'Zealand was particularly rich in its ferns, said Miss M. O. Crookes in the course of a lecture on ferns of the Dominion given to members of the Auckland Botanical Society at the Auckland University College last evening. Dr. H. A. Chatfield presided.
It was the fame of the ferns of the country, she said, which had brought Mr. H. t'arse. a noted botanist, out here. The 10 species of the tree fern, found from the farthest North to one of the sub-Antarctic islands, were considered by many famous botanists to be the most beautiful in ihe world. Fortunately. too. most of the Dominion's ferns were easy to cultivate. The beautiful and massive King fern, now becoming rare round Auckland, was an example of a primitive type.
The speaker illustrated her address with lantern slides of ferns in their natural settings, together with living and pressed specimens. In an effort to help fernlovers, n tour of the Domain fernery will be undertaken on July 1.
