YOUNG MEN CHARGED

ADMISSION OF OFFENCES.

VEHICLES LETT UNLOCKED.

A feature of the evidence given against two young men who appeared in the Police Court this morning before Messrs. C. H. Moses and F. Carter, •T.P.'s. on five charges of unlawfully converting motor cars to their own use. was that in each case the owners had left their ca.s in the streets with the doors unlocked. The accused were aged 20 and IS and the elder of the two was al~o charged with forging a cheque for £20.") and uttering it at the Xewton branch of the Union Bank of Australia.

The owners of the cars gave evidence that the cars were removed without their authority from where they had been left in city streets, and in each ca-e the car had been later recovered undamaged.

The police stated that in one or were two cheque books and from one o* these the elder accused had extracted a cheque, filled it in for the amount f'f .€205 and forged the name of the owner. Ho had next morning cashed it at the branch office of the bank in Xowton, and when interviewed by DetectiveSergeant Aplin an<l Detective Miller at :! o'clock the following moning handed to the detectives £l!V>. saying that he had spent the balance. Both accused were very frank when interviewed bv the detectives, and gave every assistance to have the matters cleared up.

Detective-Serjeant Aplin said he was satisfied the younger of the two accused had no knowledge of the forging or uttering of the cheque. The accused, whose names. the Bench ordered not to be published, each ]>leaded guilty and were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, hail being allowed in each case at £100. Mr. I. Ololdstine appeared for the elder accused, and Mr. K. Aekins for the younger of them.
