TONNAGE RAISED.
RCAD CLASSIFICATION.
CLAY SURFACE UNHARMED,
Following the suggestion of the Commissioner of Transport, the Waitemata County Council to-day agreed to raise the general classification of count v roads to Class IV. That would allow a gross load of .1 tons and meant lifting the load on clay roads to that figure from 3A tons. Mr. C. A, Cawkwell, county clerk, reporting on the matter, said' that iii his opinion a .1-ton load on a clay road would do no appreciable damage'to the road surface. Another factor to consider. as the commissioner pointed out, was the improvement in vehicle equipment since the original classification* were made. Then, solid and high pressure pneumatic tyres were in use. .Vow vehicles were generally equipped with low pressure tyres, which had a much less destructive effect on clay surfaces.
At his suggestion, the council reserved the right to impose winter load restrictions from .May -to September, inclusive.
