ISLAND ROADING.
WAIHEKE DEVELOPMENT.
COMMUNICATIONS IMPROVED.
A loading i r, b which has fust boon completed by tho Public Works Deportment is going to have a marked effort on residents in a large section of Waiheke Island. One of the great drawbacks to progress in the past has been, in many places, the lack of road communications or broken links in the line of communication. Twelve months ajo a beginning was made in the construction and metalling of a road from Matiatin. a deep-sea harbour, through to Ostend. A good deal of wet weather was encountered last year, but in the current year weather conditions have hcen favourable and rapid progress was made, with the result that the job was completed up to schedule with Mr. R. ('. Sclinackcnberg as the local engineer. During the constructional period there was an average of over 30 men pngaged on fhe work, these having been recruited from the Employment Division of the Labour Department, and their work has been highly spoken of by those in charge and by observant residents. A distance of three miles sixty chains was dealt with by the Public Works Department and a additional stretch was carried out by Mr. J. R. Kennedy. The position now is that through connection is available in all weathers between Matiatia, Oneroa, Surfdale, Palm Beach and Onetangi, and while resident* in those localities will be most appreciative the seasonal visitor* to the inland resorts will be enabled to visit each beach under good circumstances.
