DAVIS CUP IN THE OFFING.
N.Z. V. BRITAIN. MATCH STARTS THURSDAY. COOMBE AND MALFHOY LOSE HARD-COURT FINAL. New Zealand and Britain, who had byes in the first round of the European zone of the Davis Cup, meet on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week. The teams chosen are: — Dominion. —{'. E. Malfroy, D. C. Coombe, X. V. Edwards (present New Zealand champion) and A. D. Brown. Great Britain.- C. K. Hare, L. Shaffi, R. A- Shaves and F. H. D. Wilde. A cablegram from London states that with the Davis Cup match ill the offing the "Times" tennis writer comments on the play in the British hard-court championships at Bournemouth. He says: '"He lias not seen (.'oombc play so well. Malfroy is a master of the art of doubles play, and annexed the mixed title with Betty Nuthall. Yet .T. S. Olliff and H. Billington defeated Coombe and Malfroy in the men's final." The score was: B—6, 5—7, 6—l, 7—5. A later message stated that Yugoslavia eliminated Ireland at Zagreb. As Switzerland, Holland and Rumania were beaten on Sunday by Germany, Poland and Hungary, all the bye«s have now been eliminated and the complete draw for the second round is (in order from top to bottom): —Norway a walkover from Czechoslovakia; Belgium v. India; Italy v. Monaco; Yugoslavia v. Hungary: Germany v. Poland; Sweden v. Denmark; Great Britain v. New Zealand; France v. China. CANADA'S OPPORTUNITY. TOKYO, May S. • Because Yamagalshl is not available Japan has withdrawn from the American zone of the Davis Cup contest. The winner of (ho first round tic. Panada v. Culm, will therefore go straight to the final. Japan had a h.ve, as also has Philippines. which will meet the winner of the Australia v. Mexico match.
