DOGS ON PAY ROLL.
HERD SHEEP OFF LINE. PERFECT TRAFFIC SENSE. LONDON, April 8. The 25 sheep dogs employed by the Great Western Railway in Wales are having a busy time. Thousands ofj sheep are being moved to new pastures.! On the way they often break through fences that guard the railway track, to the peril of their lives and the delay of trains. The duty of the dogs—j which belong to the gangers but whose licenses are paid by the company- —is to herd them out of danger. The animals work "on their own." finding themselves the gaps through! which to drive the sheep. They have: perfect traffic sense. If, as they work.; two trains come along from different! directions, they lie down between the two tracks till the trains have passed.] Should maintenance men working on the track fail to notice the whistle of an approaching train, the dogs hark at them until the warning is obeyed. These are the only sheep dogs on any British railway's pay roll.
