Hard On The Cabbage
, THE past few weeks have played i 1 havoc with cabbage. In most seasons it is difficult to bring any of the cabbage tribe safely through the summer, but this ( season, especially during Februf ary and March, it was a miracle i if anything more than a few 1 stumps were left. I The result is that during the next few week# green vegetables will be scarce. 1 The remains of cabbage shrould be cleared away—and what is more importt ant —the ground should have a dressing •f some sterilising fluid.
Soil underneath a crop of cabbage . must be teeming with myriads of pests . in various forms. Probably one of the , most handy is a solution of coal-tar dis- , infectant. This is easily obtained and easily diluted with water. A solution , of one in a 100 —say, a tablespoon to a , gallon of water —should be sprayed on the soil. At the moment the best means of overcoming the need of green ■ vegetables is to prepare a piece of , ground and make a sowing of mustard or rape. An application of sulphate of ammonia will hurry this already quie'e- ' growing crop along, besides making the leaves more suoculcnt.
