AUCKLAND SINGER.
TRIBUTE TO MRS. A. BARTLETT.
A tribute was paid to the community work of Mrs. Sarah A. Bartlett by speakers yesterday afternoon at the large gathering of women at Birkdale, in voicing the regret occasioned by her departure from the district on a visit to Sydney. She is the widow of Mr. Alfred Bartlett, who for many years commanded the 3rd Auckland Infantry Regiment, with the rank of lieutenantcolonel. He was also deputy-Mayor of Birkenhead, and member of the Borough Council between 1913 and 1923.
Mrs. Bartlett, a daughter of the late Mr. Robert Peace, of Auckland, was a well-known contralto vocalist, and before her marriage in 1884 was a soloist in the Beresford Street Congregational Church choir and on occasions sang solos in performances by the Auckland Choral Society. Her talent was greatly appreciated, and was generously given for deserving causes throughout Auckland. Since the death of her husband in 1932 Mrs. Bartlett continued to live at Birkdale, where she did much to improve the amenities of the district and was a foundation member of the Dramatic Circle and show committee. With a view to developing new talent she supervised dancing classes for children.
Mrs. Bartlett is to re-side in Sydney with her daughter, Mrs. Cyril Scott.
