DEFAULTER BEATEN.

RUNS NEARLY LAST. I — • ■! ' THE SYDNEY CUP. N.Z.-BREO COLT SUCCEEDS. ■ I SYDNEY, April 10. The racing on the second day of the Australian Jockey Club's autumn meeting at Randwick to-day was decidedly better than on Saturday owing to the larger fields, which produced thrilling finishes and some fast times. The weather was glorious, and the attendance was fi2.000. The New Zealand-bred colt Mosaic, who did so well in the St. Legcr on Saturday, ran up to form to win the Sydney Cup most convincingly from last year's winner. L'Aiglon. The New Zealandeins-De-faulter and Malagigi, who were crowded in. found the early pace too hot, but Malagigi showed to some advantage _ by finishing third. The race was run in time only a quarter of a second outside Wotan's Australian and New Zealand record of 3.21%# The jockey L. J. Ellis, describing Defaulters disappointing display in the Sydney Cup to-day, said that he struck" trouble in the first furlong when six or seven horses squeezed round him and Defaulter refused to do his best thereafter. The rider of Malagigi, H. Badger, stated that his mount was outstayed by two better horses. Results:— EASTER PLATE of £fOOO. Seven furlongs. For two-year-old ,'illies.
