" A rumour alleged to originate from a -reliable source is going the business rounds that the Government intends to increase the excise duty on sugar by a halfpenny, which- would give an additional revenue on the present consumption of £300,000. It was stated in Auckland this afternoon by a man vitally interested l in the sugar business that he had not heard any rumours of increase in the excise duty on sugar.
