MEN OVER SIXTY. BRIDGING WORKLESS GAP. STATEMENT BY MR. SAVAGE, (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, announced to-day that to overcome the difficulty of inen aged 60 who, while qualifying for the age benefit under the Social Security, will have no income between April 1 and 23,4 it has been /decided .to provide work Until April 14 for those men who will earn no other income during that period. £ This means that the age benefit for A|>ril will be i payable on April 23. Mr. Savage adds that there is no bar to accepting ordinary employment instead of the age benefit or to supplementing thp age benefit by the amount of allowable income. The Government will also instruct placement officers to assist men in obtaining employment.
