1 * library league report. I YEAR'S ACTIVITIES REVIEWED. ! In congratulating the members of the Mayoress' War Memirial Library League on the excellent work they had done during the past year the president, Lady Davis, spoke briefly on the objects of the League. S.he reminded the members that the league had been started 19 years ago as a practical memorial to the men who had given up their lives in the Great War, and she pointed out the need for the - continuation of such a memorial work. In reviewing the work of the year, Lady Davis expressed the hope that the work of the league would continue to be a memorial, and that during the next twelve months the league would not be called on to extend their activities in connection with further active war work.

Lady Davis also congratulated the members" on their excellent balancesheet, which showed the league to be in a better financial position than ever reported before. The satisfactory financial posiiion of the league was also ■mentioned by Mrs. A. D. Campbell, who, in moving^its adoption, gave a brief survey of the previous hand to mouth existence of the league. Annual Report. The nineteenth annual report of the league was presented by the honorary secretary, Mrs. A. McNair. In reviewing the work Mrs. McNair made special mention of the Christmas cards, which had been personally signed by Lady Davis. Judging by the letters of thanks, she said, these cards with their personal touch had been greatly appreciated. This year over eight hundred had been I sent out and a great deal of time and 1 work had been spent in preparing, them. I Mrs. MfcNair also reported that during I the year a new committee had been added to the league. The women's committee of the British Legion (New Zealand) had undertaken the work of proI viding school books for the backblocks, and although only a small committee they had already done excellent work. Special mention was also made of the Tasman Club, which had undertaken the responsibility of supplying books asked for by special request. The literature distributed during the year was indicated in the annual report as follows: —Hard bound books, 3312; magazines, 6549; scrap books (large and medium-sized), 250; scrap-books (small-sized), 95; children's books, 288; school books, 195; toys, 400; Christmas cards, 844; calendars, 400; used cards, 350; playing cards, 10 packs; booklets, 196. A large case containing toys, scrap-books, cards, Bibles, hymn books, books, papers and a gramaphone and records were sent to Niue Island. In concluding her annual report Mrs. McNair gave special thanks to the members of the executive for the untiring work, to the Northern and Union Steamship Companies for their free transport of books and parcels, and to Mr. Rod Talbot and Messrs. Gordon and Gotch for parcels received. Committee Reports. The following committee _ reports were presented at the meeting last night: —St. John Ambulance, by Miss L. Phillips; W.C.T.U., by Mrs. McNair; Tasman Club, Mrs. E. A. Arroll; Missions to Seamen, Miss Clark; Philanthropic Committee, Mrs. A. McNair; Camp Section, Mrs. McNair; Auckland Grammar Old Girls' Committee, Mrs. J. Nicholson; St. Cuthbert's Old Girls' Association, Mrs. Campbell; Christmas card section, Mrs. Webster; British Legion Women's Committee, Mrs. C. Curner. At the recommendation of the executive, Mrs. A. McNair was unanimously re-elected honorary secretary and treasurer. At the conclusion of the business part of the meeting Mrs. McNair presented the Mayoress, Lady Davis, with a bouquet of mixed summer flowers. Supper was served and a short musical programme was presented, comprising vocal solos by Mrs. Armstrong K.e\ en and Mrs. R. C. Rawdon and a duet by Mrs. Baker and Mrs. J. B. Jones, and a monologue by Miss Nancy Warren. The accompanist was Mrs. Doull.
