LETTER OF WARNING.
High Cost Of Living In The
Dominion.
ADVICE TO AUSTRALIANS,
MELBOURNE, March 6.
The Melbourne "Herald" to-night published a letter from Wellington, signed "Ex Melburnian," warning tradesmen against living costs in New Zealand, and stating that the rent for a four-roomed old wooden house was at least £3 a week.
The writer says he Is earning £8 a week as a salesman, and advises tradesmen earning £5 a week in Melbourne not to come to New Zealand for less than £10 a week.
The demands of some of the Melbourne unions for the payment of fares and travelling time both ways for men engaged for building work in NewZealand may cause a hitch in the engagement of men here. Officials of the unions conferred with Mr. J. Hodgens, M.P., the New Zealand representative, to-day. Mr. Hodgens will interview applicants to-morrow.
