ON SIXTH TRIP.
LORD NUFFIELD HERE.
ONLY THREE DAYS IN N.Z.
WAR NOT EXPECTED.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, Monday.
Lord Nuffield arrived by the Awatea to-day on his sixth visit to the Dominion. He will spend only* three days in New Zealand, going to Palmerston North tomorrow, then on to Napier, returning to Wellington via the Wairarapa, and leaving by the Rangitiki on Thursday. In an interview Lord Nuffield said his trip was in keeping with his policy of keeping in touch with conditions in the Dominions. In regard to Britain he said she waß busy rearming. That programme would not be.cut off suddenly, but would slacken, so that industrial production would gradually replace it. Britain was busier than any other country.
Regarding the international situation, he said he did not think there was going to be a war. Mr. Chamberlain's idea was to prevent any further bloodshed. "Some people suggest that Mr. Chamberlain is afraid of war, but we all are," he said. Britain was rearming, not to fight, but to prevent fighting, and her rearmament was faster than anybody else's. If he thought there was going to be a war he would not be visiting New Zealand, he continued, international affairs were evolving to a degree that if a war was started the rest of the world would be against the aggressor nation. Lord Nuffield said he thought Mr. Chamberlain was responsible for America's present international attitude.
Lord Nuffield also made reference to Jewish refugees. Britain, he said, was taking a large proportion and he thought the Dominions would be better off if they took a fair number of the better class, who were nearly all people of high education and could teach something. He had noticed, he added, some on his trip out and he was surprised to find they were of such a desirable type.
