THE CLASSIC.

PAUL'S TRIUMPH.

WON BY A NECK.

THIRD WIN IN RACE.

FAVOURITE RUNS SECOND.

The Great Northern Trotting Derby for 1939 resulted in a criumph for the Mangere owner-trainer J. T. Paul, who had previously won the race with Great Peter and Great Parrish. The winner, a nice Travis Axworthy horse, who won the Trotting Stakes on this course 12 months ago, was in third position on the fence behind Shadow Son and Kewpie's Jewel practically all the way. It was not until the straight was entered for the run home that Paul pulled Contender to the outside to come with a devastating run and get up and defeat the favourite, Shadow Son,-,;by a neck. Kewpie's Jewel was showing signs of distress at the distance and tangled to be a we 1 ! beaten horse, at the finish, while Auto Bingen, who • was not prominent until the concluding stages, finished on strongly to be only a head awav in fourth position.

Sufficient indication has been given of the material running of the race which gave cause for speculation as the field bunched running across the top for the straight. At* that stage Shadow Son was only half a length .in fronts of Kewpie's Jewel, Contender being threequarters of: a length further back in a pocket on the fence, Wishful next jind Artist's- -Gem- and Auto Bingen just behind. Shadow. Son appeared to have the race won half a furlong from, home, but., Contender, maintaining a great effort, wore him down to win all out liy a Lead. Wishful w r as fifth ' a fair distance back, Artist's Gem next and Te Roto and Honey Pot together last. Recollection established '*. a. course record of 2.41 2-5.

Trial' Handicap

A feature of the Trial Handicap was the defeat of the red-hot favourite, Audrey's Last, in ,the last- stride by Great Surprise, an Epsom-trained horse who has been performing exceptionally well on the track., Great Surprise won on its merits, because it lost a little ground at the start through bobbling, and covered a little extra groun/d in running, but Audrey's Last, who had made practically all the running,, really lost the race through a slight break at the home turn. Gay Moko and Dick Redmond were always in the first four, and it might fairly be said that it was a four-horse race. i

Audrey's Last was the first to show out from Dick Redmond, Air Pilot and Gay Moko, but after going three furlongs Air Pilot went to a break and his place in the first four was taken by Great Surprise, who was on the outside. These four were six lengths clear of Air Pilojfc with half a mile to go, with the rest of the field hopelessly out of it. Audrey's' Last turned for home a neck In front of Gay Moko, with Great Surprise on the outside challenging strongly. A great race home resulted in a victory for Great Surprise in the last stride. Dick Bedmond was right up fourth, with Reception four lengths further back fifth and Air Pilot next. Won in Last Stride. The young Waikato , trainer, AT. Stewart, who has been having a very successful season, continued in" winning \ oln in the Waiheke Handicap when he oro\e Royal Navy to victory. Boyal ..a\ y was always one of the leaders and , * ' n good style, winning with a little in hand. Top Hand ran his best 'sue to date, and when he joined Royal t.avy_ ,n the lead just after thev entered J stiaight his victory was proclaimed. with e r' ft Wart had a I!tt ' e hand wn K ya i y , and tlltf y went on to ,7 1 lnn ? "eck. The hot favourite umhle had every chance, as he wbs in the lead crossing the top, but failed to stay on.

Northern Smile ran an exceptionally pood race and might soon lose novice status. Worthy Crest was showing the way tc Scottish Bard. Roval Xavv, Tumble, Top Hand and Northern Smile o\er the first furlong. Opposite the etan<ls .Scottish Bard was just in front of Tumble, but shortly afterwards the leader tangled and Tumble shot out two lengths clear of Worthy Crest, with Roval Xavv and Top Hand both going well just behind. Royal Navy was just clear of Top Hand into the straight, with Tumble ha'f a length further back, and the leader went on resolutely to win well. Northern Smile came home well for fourth position, and Scottish Bard and Our Jewel were together next. Davey Day, Grand Dame and Jewel r s t broke in the early stasee to actually settle whatever chance they nay have possessed.

PROTEST SUCCEEDS.

After the race for the Great Northern Derby a protest was lodged against Kewpie's Jewel for galloping in the straight by G. Pliipps, the owner of Auto Bingen, who finished fourth! After deliberation, the stewards reversed the placings for third by awarding that position to Auto Bingen.
