"I am sure the Government will not look in vain for support from the Dominions to safeguard British shipping," declared Mr. Oliver Stanlev, President of the Board of Trade, at the launching of the Shaw Savill new liner Dominion Monarch, which will enter the Britain-Australia-New Zealand service.
He added that the Government was fully alive to the menace of foreign subsidies and was investigating shipping industry's proposed safeguards in this connection.
Replying to Lord Essendon's comments about harmful methods of foreisn subsidies, Mr. Stanley said that the Mercantile Marine was an indispensable adjunct to the Empire's (Jefence since British ships in 1937 carried between 92 and 99 per cent respectively of British imports and exports from the Empire I The Dominion Monarch will pick up jat Capetown 300 South Africans for a round voyage to Australia and New ' Zealand.
