"PYJAMA GIRL WAS MY SISTER."
MAN'S STATEMENT. Withheld Fact Because Of Parents' Wishes. N.S.W. MURDER MYSTERY. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The police received information from a man at Bourke, in the far west of New South Wales, that the murdered "pyjama girl," whose body is still preserved in formalin at the Sydney University, was his sister, named Gwen Garland.
She was formerly in business at Sydney with a German importer of lingerie, whose photograph, along with the girl, he (the brother) still possesses. She went to Albury in 1934, just before her murder was reported in September of that vear.
He had refrained from communicating with the police in deference to the wishes of the girl's parents, but was now disclosing the secret owing to having had sleepless nights.
The police have taken the matter up, but are not over optimistic.
The body of a young woman was found in a culvert on the Lowlong Road about four and a half miles from Albury, New South Wales, on the morning of September 2, 1934. The head was severely battered, and the lower part of the body burned. A detailed description of the body and also of the pyjamas in which it was clad was circulated throughout Australia and New Zealand. It was believed that the woman was between 22 and 27 years of age, and that she was of slim to medium build.
A reward of £500 for information leading to the conviction of the person responsible for the murder was offered bv the Xew South Wales police in April, 1936.
After having been adjourned several times the inquest was concluded at Alburv on January 18, 1938, the coroner's verdict being that death was due to injuries to the woman's skull feloniously inflicted by some person or persons unknown.
