When two men were acf-o>ted by detectives in South Montreal Street, near Selwvn Street hint evening. 11 shot was fired and the two men fled. N'o onn was hit. The officers gave chase »nd the two men separated in their flight. One man ran down Ha/eldean Road, while the other tinned north, lrtter rejoining his companion. ) Although the detectives followed fast, the men made good their esenpe. The detectives, with a constable. were investigating reports of petrol thefts from city storehouses. At. 10 o'clock last evening tliev went by car to the Shell Oil Company's premises in Montreal Street. They saw two men standing nearby and spoke to them, and the officers were startled by the flash and crack of a pistol. Later a motor truck was discovered parked nearby, and the detoctivcs took possession of it. This morning Senior Sergeant. .1, Bickerdiiko said (ho shote had not been tired by his men. Petrol Thefts. The police are at present making further inquiries into tho case. For some time in ITic past there ha\e been many complaints of petrol thefts in the city. Inquiries have been mad.', and in some cases watches lia\c 1 •11 kept. Defective's Horns and Watts were in.iking inquiries of this nature la.-t eve ning.
An official of one nf the nil companies stated this afternoon that five 11-pillion drums of petrol, valued at had been stolen from their store on Friday or Saturday e*ening. Other oil company official* gaid they had not Buffered, although one added that petrol had been stolen some months ago.
