SAVED FROM SURF.

RESCUES ON "WEST COAST. Two girls and a man who were carried seawards for almost a quarter of a mile by the undertow at Karefeare Beach yesterday afternoon were rescued by members of the surf life saving clubs. Mr. V. Capper, of the Waitemata club, and Mr. A. McDonald, of the Milforcl club, were undertaking an examination swim for surf medallions when they saw that the two girls were in difficulties. Mr. Capper went to the assistance of the girl who was the farther out. They were then joined by another man, who also got difficulty. Mr. A. B. Odlin, of the'Karekare club, then swam out with a belt and all ' four were brought ashore. The girls suffered from shock, but were able to leave the beach after resuscitation treatment. A fourth swimmer who got into difficulty near the beach was brought ashore without trouble and was not distressed.
