MAYOR AS WITNESS.
IN TRAFFIC PROSECUTION. MOTORIST FINED. (By Telegraph.—l'ress Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The principal witness in a traffic case beard before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., today, was tlio Mayor of Wellington, Mr. T- .J- 1 - 4. Hislop, who doscribed an incident on the main* highway near Pahautanui on December 17. Andrew Albert Taylor, of Wanganui, was charged with driving in a manner which might have been dangerous. He did not appear, but his statement was read. Mr. Hislop's evidence was that when proceeding - from Wellington he was approaching praetieallv a light-angle turn. Three cars were approaching, the third travelling very fast past two. Defendant's car swerved very badly, but he managed to straighten up nnd missed witness' car. Witness had seen the car coming and had slowed down to a very low speed. Defendant's statement was that he cleared Mr. Hislop's car by about two feet and as he had not gone near it he did not go back. / Defendant was convicted and was fined j£3.
